well, that's a worrisome (if unrelated) issue.

Could you experiment with something? install (if you haven't already)
the GNU autoconf tools, check out 2.4.6 from SVN at:

 http://svn.swish-e.org/swish-e/tags/rel-2.4.6/

and run:

 ./bootstrap
 ./configure && make test

I am suspicious that the configure and Makefiles in 2.4.6 are hosed up
because of the version of autoconf I used to make the release package.
