In other words, the errors the parser reports don't affect the index? Is there any advantage of using the html2 parser that affects the index?

Yes, it catches broken html like </about_us>  ;)

Is that really suppose to be a tag?

HTML2 parser uses a real parser.  HTML doesn't complain as it's not
smart enough to know better.
