Thanks for this. I am sure it will help someone to find it in the mail archive. 
I do not think we'll make it part of the core dist since it requires additional 
CPAN modules, but it's a decent way to solve the encoding issue.

You might also have used Search::Tools::UTF8 and the to_utf8() function, which 
should Just Work.
