well besides my initial "eeewwwww! ugly perl4 badness" reaction, I think your
specific wildcard problem is in query.pl near the lines commented by:

# check for valid characters in keywords

where there is no '*' listed as a valid character.

but really. ditch all that badness and start over with one of the example .cgi
scripts in the dist. swish.cgi is your friend.
