I noticed that when this happens, an index isn't written -- the .temp 
files are kept, though.  What if this is "expected" behavior?  Can I 
just move the .temp files into place?  Will searching mind that the 
indexes are empty?

I have a few indexes, and some of them might be empty at any given time. 
But I want them to exist so I don't have to worry about whether they are 
there when I search.

How about a "ForceEmptyIndex" configuration item?  :-)
