Solaris 10 build error for 2.4.4

Hello. I've searched the docs and this discussion for something similar;
apologies if this is answered elsewhere:

I am attempting to build 2.4.4 on Solaris 10 using the standard Forte
compiler:
sun10{bruce}% /opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc -V
cc: Sun C 5.8 2005/10/13

The error is:
source='proplimit.c' object='proplimit.lo' libtool=yes \
        DEPDIR=.deps depmode=none /bin/bash ../config/depcomp \
        /bin/bash ../libtool --tag=CC --mode=compile cc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.
-I. -I.  -Dlibexecdir=\"/usr/local/lib/swish-e\" -DPATH_SEPARATOR=\":\"
-I/usr/include/libxml2 -Ireplace   -g -c -o proplimit.lo proplimit.c
 cc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -Dlibexecdir=\"/usr/local/lib/swish-e\"
-DPATH_SEPARATOR=\":\" -I/usr/include/libxml2 -Ireplace -g -c proplimit.c
-KPIC -DPIC -o .libs/proplimit.o
"array.h", line 40: zero or negative subscript
cc: acomp failed for proplimit.c

Version 2.4.3 compiles fine. There is no difference in array.h between
version, but there is a difference in proplimit.c, as per below:

sun10{bruce}%  diff /C/swish-e-2.4.4/src/proplimit.c
/C/swish-e-2.4.3/src/proplimit.c

46d36
< #include "array.h"
595c585
<         sort_array[i].sort = DB_ReadSortedData( meta_entry->sorted_data, i
);
---
>         sort_array[i].sort = meta_entry->sorted_data[i];

Any ideas about how to get past this?

Many thanks
