There's an experimental feature you can enable at compile time
--enable-incremental.  Then you use -u to update and -r to remove
files.  IIRC, the replaced/removed files are not really removed, just
flagged to be ignored.

There's other issues that make the feature not a perfect solution --
such as the index in an inconsistent state when it's being updated.

Perhaps others can common on their experiences with it.
