bingo!

added /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf
[root@green etc]# ldconfig
[root@green etc]# swish-e -V
SWISH-E 2.4.0

So, how did I get away with going from 2.2.3 through PR1-4 without 
running into this?
