I uploaded a patch to cvs yesterday that should take care of that.  It now
returns an empty string if a document does not have a date.  This comes at
a cost of a second: the first second of 1970 UTC cannot be stored as a
date.  I hope nobody misses it.  Few of us can even remember 1970, or admit
to missing it.
