Thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion on Swish-E, its 
index, and the compatibility/portability of this index to other platforms.

My target platform will be a PC running Linux, so this should be completely 
compatible with an index created by Windows NT4. As Ron Samuel Klatchko 
pointed out (and I agree with him), this has little to do with operating 
systems a lot to do with the Intel chips they have in common.
