Hmmmm...... they mystery deepens.

I removed all the patches applied from the PATCH directory and lo and 
behold, it works. I'll track down the problem and post it to the 
list. Currently have the following:

-tswitch
memoryleak2
spider

shouldn't be too hard to figure out which is giving the problem
